Shiatsu is a therapeutic massage, originally from Japan, which has been taken up and developed in the West.

The form of Shiatsu I practise combines pressure on acupoints with stretches, muscle work, gentle manipulation and cranial techniques.

Shiatsu is done through the clothes, on a padded mat or a low couch. Clients are advised to wear loose, comfortable clothes. Each session of Shiatsu lasts approximately one hour, including consultation.

Why do people have Shiatsu? Shiatsu can help solve specific problems, for example, relieve pain in the back, shoulders and neck; help headaches; mobilise joints; loosen the spine. It can be a useful tool in rehabilitation from injury, through using joint mobilisation techniques, local acupressure points and working on the muscles. Shiatsu has a very calming effect, and is very effective in counteracting stress and all the conditions associated with it, such as painful shoulders, headaches, IBS, acid reflux, etc.

Shiatsu can can be relaxing or invigorating. Working on the parasympathetic nervous system, it helps to initiate healing processes in the body.

Some people come to Shiatsu not for any specific reason, but to treat themselves to this pleasant experience. You walk out feeling different to when you walked in.

Becoming a Shiatsu practitioner requires 3 years of training, including Oriental medical theory, meridians and pressure points, anatomy, physiology and pathology, with around 600 practice hours in and outside the school.
